This type of puzzle falls into the category of "ladder ring" puzzles. As the number of levels and rings increases, so does the number of steps required to solve it. The basic puzzle concept of Pinetree is very old, and it is believed to have originated in China. Interestingly, the exterior shape of the puzzle has little to do with how it functions, and in China it has appeared in the shape of a pagoda. Being from Canada, we have attempted to make it look like one of our more common trees.
In the past we have made Pinetree puzzles with an even larger number of levels and rings, the larger ones tending to be very tedious to solve. We prefer the version pictured here since it maintains the basics of the puzzle without allowing the solving to become wearisome. This is an interesting classic puzzle, and solving it once does not mean you've mastered it!
